how our Italian shoes are made Thomas Bird fitting advice: Bourne
"Fits ever so slightly generous by around a quarter size. With leather insoles, they fit true to size. If you are inbetween sizes, then we normally recommend dropping down to the nearest whole size."

Italian made, oxblood monk strap

Bourne is a beautiful double buckle monk shoe in a hand finished oxblood patina. They can add a splash of colour to a neutral outfit and look great with a navy or grey suit. They are hand crafted in Italy, using the finest, full grain calf leather.

These are cap toe monks, with an elegant rounded toe. The 2 metal buckles provide adjustability, say if you have a slightly higher instep, and undoing the top buckle helps when you put them on.

Looks good with

Oxblood pairs perfectly with navy blue, either a suit or jacket and trousers for a more relaxed look.  Monk shoes are less conservative than others. The buckles and straps add interest, as does the cap toe.

The combination of oxblood and a navy suit will always look good. But also try sockless, with a jacket and light chinos or trousers for another killer look.

Stitched leather sole and stacked leather heel

The sole is stitched onto the upper with a traditional Italian method called blake stitching. Being stitched the sole can be easily replaced when it eventually wears. But to extend the sole’s life, we use a rubber insert for added wear and better grip.

There is a 25mm genuine leather stacked, heel, with 4 brass pins, and a rubber piece, again for better wear and grip. There is also a ‘gentleman’s corner’, a small bevel that reduces snagging of the heel on your trousers.

Materials and craftsmanship

We use the best leathers and other materials to make these monk shoes.  Leathers are carefully selected and cut to form the pattern.  Stitching and shaping the upper is a skilled job.

Several stages of dying the oxblood plus careful polishing creates a depth of colour. The sole is stitched onto the upper before a final and polish completes the process.

Made in Italy

These shoes are made in Italy. We work with some of the finest artisan shoe makers who are true experts in their craft. They have generations of knowledge in cutting, stitching, shaping and dying leather.

Italy is also famous for the quality of its leathers and other materials that are used in the shoe making process. It has a long and deserved tradition as the home of fine shoe making and we wanted nothing less for our Thomas Bird collection.
